Ecology Link was commissioned by Gunsmoke Paintball, to produce an Ecology Management Strategy for a proposed new paintball site in Essex.

Protecting habitat and establishing diversity

The client wanted to incorporate commercial paintball activities within an area of woodland, whilst protecting and enhancing the Local Wildlife Site (LWS) status of the site. The Strategy focused on protecting and maintaining habitat for great crested newts and reptiles. However, the current neglected state of the woodland required a sympathetic, pro-active approach to establish an age and structural diversity to the woodland canopy. This will encourage a greater ground flora community.

Review and assessment

A review of the present condition of the woodland and ponds, in light of previous studies, was undertaken. This included assessing the proposed position of game zones and key conservation management ideals within both sanctuary and gaming areas. Consultation with Essex Wildlife Trust and Natural England allowed management options to be discussed and agreed.
